Morning Session: 8:00am to 12:00pm 

Implementing Effective Training

Facilitator: Dr. David Byers

Adult learning principles: check! Needs assessment: check! Learning objectives: check! Training program and materials designed: check! So, now you're ready to implement effective training. Or, are you? Attend this interactive session, with Dr. David Byers, to discover the role that you, as the instructor, play in engaging with and meeting the needs of the adult learner.

   

By the end of the morning session, attendees will be able to:

  • Identify the factors that determine when it is appropriate to use a pedagogical approach, an andragogical approach, or a mixed approach
  • Synthesize knowledge of the theories of Emotional Intelligence, Multiple Intelligences, and Active Learning relative to meeting the education needs of the adult student
  • Utilize knowledge of change, cognitive dissonance, conflict, critical thinking, communication, and creativity to challenge students to take charge of their learning success
  • Incorporate components of the theories of human development in relation to the dynamic behaviors of adults as individual students and as part of a group of learners
  • Differentiate between the theories of manage and leading with regard to the roles instructors play as part of appropriately meeting the needs of their students 

 

    

Dr. David Byers is a full Professor at Bellevue University where he's worked for 15 years. He is the Program Director for the undergraduate Adult Education (AEDU) degree program and the undergraduate Business (BUSC) degree program, which combined have 700-800 students a year and David develops, teaches, and manages a team of 45 adjunct professors who teach in these programs.
        He has been a teacher, trainer, manager, and leader in the field of education and training for more than 30 years in a wide variety of professional and educational organizations. He also runs his own consulting business specializing in the fields of leadership, management, training, and education.
        His undergraduate degree is in Speech Communications with an emphasis in Theater. His first master’s degree is in Adult and Continuing Education. His second master’s in History with three specializations: Leadership in Western Civilization, Leadership Ethics and Morals, and Leadership in U.S. Businesses.       

Afternoon Session: 1:00pm to 5:00pm

Presentation Best Practices

Facilitators: Liz Brumels and Leann McGrane  

  

Attend this interactive learning experience, with Liz Brumels and Leanne McGrane, that will teach you the skills and techniques of great presenters.  This session will help you rock your next presentation by teaching you the art of being the presentation.  Learn powerful introductions to get started on the right foot, learn how to handle impromptu questions and interactions, and work on cadence, stance, gestures and presence to command your next session.  

By the end of the afternoon session, attendees will be able to:

  • Enhance your skills to move from being a presenter to being the presentation     
  • Learn to handle impromptu questions and interactions
  • Know your brand and how to present it at all time
         

Liz Brumels is a Talent Development Business Partner at Markel.  In her role at Markel, she develops, designs and facilitates operational and soft skill training for departments across the organization. Liz is passionate about creating training solutions that support the goals of the business and bring value to associates. Her training and development experience started in the non-profit sector where she designed and delivered training for employees and volunteers. Liz brings a wealth of knowledge and experience to her training design and facilitation. She is a member of the Society of Insurance Trainers & Educators (SITE). She serves as the Director of Certification for ATD Nebraska. Liz holds a master’s degree in Human Capital Management and is a Certified Professional in Learning and Performance. When she isn’t working, Liz loves to bake and is known for her cupcake creations. She enjoys spending time with her husband, son, and ornery dog.

    

Leann McGrane is a Talent Development Business Partner at Markel. She is a tenured learning and development professional with extensive knowledge in curriculum design, delivery, and project management.  She is a leader at Markel helping to establish global onboarding, technical curriculum and a mentoring program.  Leann’s greatest strengths come with her ability to think outside the box and see the big picture while sharing her passion for encouraging others to achieve their highest potential.   Leann is involved outside of Markel as the Co-President of the Westgate Community Club, which helps to support the school in gaining resources, materials and programs for the children.  She is also a member of ATD, SITE and a past member of the Nebraska Claims Association.  Outside of work, Leann is active in outdoor activities and busy spending time with her precocious daughter.
