In this session, you will learn how an instructional design and development team at a fortune 200 company carries out their day to day operation.  Hear about the tools, techniques, standards, and conventions we use to manage our learning projects over their life cycle.  From the initial customer interest, through project launch, into design and development, all the way through to project maintenance; see how we have evolved ADDIE into ADDIE-Agile to suit our needs and customer demands.

Throughout the workshop, we will hear from the audience about their own methods, and then document these deviations from the speaker presentation. Finally, we will perform an exercise to distill this down together for a very tool agnostic picture of what project management looks like within a modern learning team.

Use this session as a benchmark against your own project management methods and be ready to share your experiences and practices with the group.

Learning Objectives
  • Identify the best method of learning delivery for a particular need
  • Estimate time and resource allocation needs
  • Differentiate the presented tools, techniques and conventions with your own
  • Distinguish project requirements that drive initial scope from creeping (yet important) customer expectations
  • Discuss how an Organizational Change Management approach fits in with learning project implementation

David Kipling has designed online instruction with tools like Flash and Captivate for over 15 years. He currently manages a team of eLearning designers and instructional designers at the Union Pacific Railroad. Together they create online help and tutorials for use by Train, Engine and Yard (TEY) personnel. From traditional, compliance type training to software simulations, content is geared toward the workers in the field and helping them successfully run the railroad.

David's team at Union Pacific collaborate with application developers to create custom system solutions that meet the needs of users.  They create Quick reference Guides, Help Text, Tutorials, Software Simulations, Video and Instructor Led Training for traditional PC or mobile delivery.  They also employ Organizational Change Management strategies to help users adapt to the change and fully utilize the systems as intended.

David creates interactive, memorable experiences that tell a story and invite learners to reflect on topics instead of forcing them to passively complete a requirement.
