The Learning Event:

Have you ever led a training session and had no idea at its conclusion if it went well or not? Have you ever seen learners in your training session seem inattentive or unengaged? Have you ever entered into a training having no idea how much or how little your audience knew coming in? Have you ever thought a training session went well only to get feedback that made it clear you missed the mark? All these questions, and dozens more like them, are common indicators that there is a disconnect between the instructor and the learners.

Instructors who check in regularly with their students, who check for understanding frequently, and who solicit feedback from the class are engaging in formative assessment – an instructional strategy proven to improve the quality of instruction and learning outcomes.

The Learning Event

Formative assessment is a means of checking in with learners as a lesson unfolds to ensure their grasp of key ideas, their understanding of the material, and the effectiveness of the instructional techniques being used. Formative assessments, when used effectively, benefit both trainer and student by allowing both parties an opportunity to modify their role in the learning process. Integrating technology into the formative assessment process streamlines the communication between student and trainer, allows for multiple modes of feedback, and can facilitate dynamic and meaningful modifications to the learning process.

Join us for lunch and develop anunderstanding of this proven instructional strategy. Learn what Web 2.0 tools can best be employed to foster student feedback, see how technology can help trainers make real-time measurements of student understanding, and experience firsthand the student perspective of using technology-enhanced formative assessment techniques.

Presentation take-aways: A collection of free on-line resources that can facilitate different modes of formative assessment.

The Workshop

Roll up your sleeves for extended time to deepen your understanding of formative assessment. During this hands-on workshop, you will develop formative assessments that are relevant to you; you will have an opportunity to practice implementing assessment techniques; and you will have an opportunity to explore additional resources to help you harness the powerful tool.
