Member Spotlight

Meet our November Member of the Month: Halcyon Frank!

Tell us about your experience in the Talent Development space including places you've worked, roles you've held, and organizations you're a part of.

I started my career out of college at a plasma donation center as their training coordinator, then for the past 11 years I have been in emergency communications (911) and have been helping train and develop training for the last 7 years. I volunteer for a few organizations within the emergency communications industry and now am a full-time consultant and trainer for emergency communications focusing on developing training programs and instructor development.

What are some of your interests, strengths, and unique qualities that would help others get to know you better?

I really enjoy the opportunities I get to travel and meet people, but I also love to just be at home with my dog watching the Golden Girls. This gives me a pretty good balance.

What "work related" accomplishment(s) are you the most proud of?

I am most proud of getting my Associate Professional of Talent Development certification and my Emergency Number Professional certification as I think they demonstrate my passion for training and emergency communications.

Favorite quote

"I am a recovering perfectionist and an aspiring good enough-ist." -Brene Brown

Are there specific people in the Talent Development space you follow and why?

I follow so many great people but the first ones that come to mind are Lauren Waldman who is a learning scientist and has taught me so much about how we actually learn and what our brains are doing. Another one is Tim Slade who offers a ton of great instructional design and career advice.

Do you have a lesson you’ve learned in your career you’d like to share with others?

This ties back into my favorite quote; done is better than perfect. When it comes to designing training it'll never truly be "perfect" so don't stress or avoid projects because you don't feel they're perfect. You often have the opportunity to iterate so create it and then update it.

Do you have any favorite books or resources that you think others would find helpful?

So many! My top three would be "Design for How People Learn" by Julie Dirksen, the "Joining Forces with Your Brain" video series by Lauren Waldman, and "7 1/2 Lessons About the Brain" by Lisa Feldman Barrett
