Implementing a new, large-scale learning initiative - such as a new onboarding program, a new sales enablement effort, a new platform to customers - often requires planning and building out the program pieces while decisions are still be made on design and execution. It's easy for change management to be overlooked in these situations - sometimes with serious consequence. This session reviews some of the existing models for change management planning and provides a case-study approach to reviewing the application (or lack thereof) of the models.

This session will provide senior learning leaders with tools to help drive change management planning with new initiatives and will provide learning designers and developers with the opportunity to see how their efforts can support successful implementation of a plan.

Learning objectives

  • Evaluate commonly used models to plan change management when new learning initiatives/programs are introduced in an organization.
  • Analyze the costs and benefits of effective change management planning.
  • Plan for application of change management principles in learning-related initiatives/programs.

About the presenter

Seth Derner has spent his career fascinated with the question of how to improve learning in ways that drive real results.

As a high school agriscience teacher, Seth was one of the first in country to use live, interactive classroom technology to teach students in schools without access to agriscience classes.

As an education specialist for the National FFA Organization, Seth led the design and development of the organization’s first online program for students, the first performance support tool for teachers, and one of the largest curriculum efforts in the organization’s history.

Since founding Vivayic in 2006, Seth has worked with dozens of companies, associations, and public agencies to plan, design, and deliver new learning-related programs intended to both improve the learning experience and drive results for those organizations. Now that the team has grown to more than 20 people, Seth spends most of his time working on new initiatives and advising clients on forward-looking learning strategy.

Seth is the co–author of three books including “Strategies for Great Teaching” with Mark Reardon. The book, like Seth’s approach, is filled with practical strategies for getting better results.

Seth, his wife Carrie, and sons Rece and Beau, live in Lincoln, Nebraska. He is passionate about service in the community and is on the board of his church, an officer in his local Kiwanis club, and manages a local farmers' market.
